Ned and the Giant Prawn

Is it a cod? Is it a prawn? One thing's for certain you won't find one anywhere else. This piece of street-furniture surmounts a five metre tall cocktail stick between the National Marine Aquarium and the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth, Devon UK. It is usually referred to as the Plymouth Prawn or Barbican Prawn but I have been unable to ascertain its correct title.  I will investigate further next time I am on the Barbican. The second photo is a crop of the first taken with my new toy.

Hello Ned,

Well,I think the "toy" in the pictures looks like a combination of fish, dragon, shark and crab.
It's a little bit strange.I guess it may be some kind of symbol, isn't it?

I live in Hangzhou,Zhejiang province in China.
I don't know if you have heard about Hangzhou.
It's famous for the Westlake. It's a beautiful city with wonderful scenery. Hangzhou is one of the most famous tourist attractions in China.

I'll show you some picture of Hangzhou next time.Or maybe you can search the Internet. It will naver let you down,I promise.
If you come to Hangzhou,I can be your tour guide.

By the way,Hangzhou is near Shanghai. It takes about 3 hours by car from Shanghai to Hangzhou.

Well,I found that I'm always saying too much when it comes to my hometown...Maybe it's because I'm really proud of it,Haha...

That's right,my major is about accouting. But maybe it doesn't fit me as I'm not careful enough. Anyway,I will try my best to achieve it.
Good luck to me,Hehe...^_^

Hoping to hear from you.
p.s.Talking to you is of great fun.Thank you very much.

Hi Michelle,

To be honest I am not sure what the “prawn statue” is meant to represent. I don’t anyone else does either. Maybe it represents the fact that this place is a port and, as you suggest, may be a combination of edible sea creatures caught off the coast here. I suppose that as long as people like it then that’s OK. Apparently some people really hate it but I don’t mind it.

I have to confess that I don’t really know too much about China, but I Googled Hangzhou and the West Lake and it does look stunningly beautiful. The article stated that Hangzhou has been one of the most renowned Chinese cities for over one thousand years so you have a right to be proud of it. I am originally from London which is also very old and historic and I am proud of it too!

Getting back to the subject of China, I looked at photos of Hangzhou Pagoda Bridge, Hu Xue Yan's former residence and also at Dreaming of the Tiger Spring. They all looked fabulous places to visit and I bet they get very busy with tourists. Perhaps, you could suggest some other places of interest in Hangzhou I could look at? And thank you for offering to be my tour guide. I will remember that if I ever find myself in China (joke).

Last year I went to Sydney, Australia to see my brother who lives there. While we were there we visited the Chinese Garden of Friendship which was a gift from the Chinese Government to the people of Australia in 1988. It is based on a classical Chinese Garden and is very beautiful. I am sure it is not as good as being in a Chinese garden in China though. I will post one of my pictures of it for you tomorrow.

P.S. Although my blog is called “Ned of the Hill”, my real name is Jerry.

Thanks for your comments. This is good fun. I will look forward to hearing from you soon.
